Abu Dhabi’s Petroleum Institute (PI) university was determined to transform its catering from an old-style corporate service to a modern “international university” style, with a focus on nutrition. The university’s supply chain department led the process to find a new caterer in tandem with the facilities management & services department, aware that 2000 students and 200 staff could easily resist changes to the familiar old, service. Procurement’s relationship with FM colleagues isn’t always a match made in heaven but in this case the formation of three joint tendering and evaluation committees led to a new service with healthier menus, nutritional labeling and an international style. Savings of AED 4m, or £770,000, were achieved thanks to the changes. Meanwhile the head of FM&S paid tribute to the “strong camaraderie” with supply chain colleagues.
Judges’ comments: “Good new ideas were brought by procurement to a complex sourcing project in a distinctive category - catering. It saved money and introduced a much improved catering service.”
